Everything you need to know about training with us
We offer classes for both adults and kids. Our adult classes are for ages 16 and up, while our kids classes are designed for ages 11-15. We focus on providing age-appropriate instruction that matches the maturity level and physical capabilities of each student.
No prior experience is necessary! We welcome complete beginners and experienced martial artists alike. Our instructors are skilled at working with students at all levels, from those trying it out for the first time to those with years of training in other styles.
For your first visit, comfortable athletic clothing (like a t-shirt and sweatpants or shorts) is perfectly fine. You don't need to bring any equipment initially — just yourself and a willingness to learn!
Your first class will be a welcoming introduction to our training. You'll observe and participate at a comfortable pace and have the opportunity to ask questions. Expect to learn basic stances, simple blocking techniques, and perhaps some fundamental movements. The atmosphere is supportive and non-intimidating, as everyone remembers being a beginner. You'll work alongside other students of various levels, and our instructors will give you individual attention to ensure you understand the basics.
Adult classes meet Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00-7:30 PM.
Kids classes (ages 11-15) meet on the same days from 5:00-6:00 PM.
We occasionally run special skills classes on weekends for those who want to learn more advanced techniques.
Shōrin-ryū Karate is an authentic Okinawan style with direct lineage to the masters in Okinawa. It is a truly historical art providing practical skills that are physically and mentally healthy. In contrast to the franchised and tournament-focused styles of mainland Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, Shōrin-ryū emphasizes balance, technique, timing, strength, and speed with a focus on natural and fluid movements designed for defense in real-world situations. It is not the flashy and aggressive karate that you see in the movies. Our techniques focus on efficiency (minimal motion), effectiveness, and traditional Okinawan principles rather than point-scoring. Techniques that score points are often ineffective, while those that are illegal in sport styles (like MMA) actually should be used if faced with a need to protect yourself, where attackers don't have rules.
Yes. Our instructors 6th Dan and above were each evaluated and certified by Katsuya Miyahira in Okinawa based on in-person testing during his visits to the United States, and/or testing videos sent to him by Sensei Iha from Lansing, MI. During those years Sensei Miyahira was the highest ranking master and president of the World Shōrin-ryū Karatedo Association. As instructors we are now learning from and accountable to Sensei Maeshiro, current president of the association, and lifetime student of Sensei Miyahira until his passing in 2010. Unfortunately, it is common for instructors who own schools to self-promote or proclaim to be the a certain rank. We take pride in the way our style keeps us humble and holds us accountable to the Okinawan quality standards.
The time to earn a black belt varies significantly based on individual dedication, attendance, and natural ability. Typically, students who train consistently two times per week along with practicing at home can expect the journey to take 3-5 years. It is important that we maintain Okinawan standards and do not rush through ranks. Testing for 4th Dan (degree) black belt and above is conducted in-person in Okinawa. When you visit Okinawa with us you'll find that your skills will match or exceed those of the Okinawan students.
Our focus is on traditional Okinawan karate as a martial art and method of self-defense, not sport competition. We do run pre-arranged drills as well as random kumite (sparring) and bunkai (application) in a controlled manner - without pads, but always with safety and learning as the primary goals.
We follow the traditional Shōrin-ryū belt ranking system, which begins with white belt and progresses through colored belts (typically yellow, orange, green, brown) before reaching black belt ranks. Promotion is based on demonstrated proficiency in techniques, kata (forms), partner work (application), and consistent attendance. Testing is conducted when instructors determine a student is ready, not on a fixed schedule. There are no shortcuts or guaranteed promotions. Each rank is earned through dedicated practice and genuine improvement.
Safety is our top priority in every class. While we train without protective pads. We prioritize control and follow traditional training methods that emphasize proper technique. We work with students at an appropriate intensity based on their skill level. Over time and through natural conditioning, students learn to correctly and comfortably block full force kicks and punches, without pads or injury. You won't have to wonder "would this work in a real situation", you'll know with confidence.
Absolutely not. Traditional Okinawan karate actually promotes the opposite—discipline, respect, self-control, and humility. Our training emphasizes mental discipline and character development alongside physical skills. Students learn that karate is for self-defense and personal growth, never for aggression or bullying. We teach respect for instructors, training partners, and the art itself. The focus on kata (forms), proper technique, and controlled practice develops patience, concentration, and emotional control. Many parents report that their children become more respectful, confident, and better able to handle conflicts peacefully after training with us. The traditional values of karate—humility, respect, and self-discipline—are integral to everything we teach.
Children's safety is paramount in our kids classes. Our instructors are all parents themselves and understand the importance of safety - and most importantly the development of character. We teach fundamental movements and basic techniques with emphasis on control and safety. Physical contact is minimal and always carefully supervised—we focus on form, balance, and understanding rather than hard contact. Students learn respect for their training partners and never use techniques inappropriately. Parents are welcome to observe classes, and we maintain open communication about any concerns.
