Truly Authentic

Introducing REAL Okinawan karate.

Since the 1980s we've been dedicated students of Seikichi Iha (伊波清吉), Hanshi 10th Dan, and highest ranking Shōrin-ryū master outside of Okinawa (Lansing, MI) prior to his passing in 2024.

In 2024 we were accepted as direct students of Morinobu Maeshiro (真栄城 守信), 10th Dan and current President of the world Shorinryu Karatedo Association in Okinawa - also the most humble and kind person you could ever meet.

In 2020 the Okinawa Prefecture Government designated both Iha Sensei and Maeshiro Sensei as Intangible Cultural Asset Holders, a recognition of historical importance held by only 9 masters alive today.

Effective Technique

No movie theatrics. No wasted motion.

Okinawan karate was born from a need to defend against life-threatening danger, not scoring points in a tournament. Shōrin-ryū emphasizes balance, minimal motion, fluid techniques, and natural movements that anyone can learn, regardless of age or physical condition.

The importance of friendship and cooperation is critical as certain techniques, illegal in sport styles like MMA, actually should be used if faced with a real need to protect yourself.

But don't worry, we ease you in slowly and have a lot of fun along the way. Learning is tailored to your pace and goals. Whether you want an intense full-contact experience, or just practical self-defense with light contact, we want to work with you.
